Planning for the Future
The partner institutions are creating a 3-5 year strategic plan for restructuring the region's nursing education system. CAN DO's strategic framework for change, which can be see in the illustration below, incorporates core competencies for the entry level nurse developed by the Massachusetts Board of Higher Education (http://www.mass.edu/currentinit/currentinitNursing.asp).

The partnership's two pilot programs inform the strategic planning process through evaluation and ongoing oversight by members of the Full Partnership. The strategic plan will include a business case demonstrating the cost and benefits of implementing strategies such as increasing faculty, expanding educational facilities, and using technology to expand access to clinical training. The plan is due to be completed in summer 2008.
Leveraging Resources
As part of the partnership development process, the REB and each partner institution strives to improve coordination of activities and resources to have greater impact and develop more comprehensive solutions to solve the nursing workforce shortage
STAR Pilot Program
A significant barrier to expanding the nursing workforce is the lack of nurse faculty. The STAR program is designed to increase the pipeline of nursing faculty by supporting ten (10) bachelor prepared nurses with scholarships, faculty mentors and employer advocates as they pursue a Masters or PhD and gain teaching experience at area schools.
Nurses Succeed Pilot Program
The Nurses Succeed Pilot program is designed to increase the enrollment of underrepresented CNAs and LPNs in nursing education and their potential for success. Based in a long-term care setting, the pilot utilizes an academic/employer career coaching model to assist students in reaching their academic goals.
