Summer is a time of great promise for youth. In a perfect world, every young person would be able to fill each summer day with experiences that broaden their horizons, with time to learn, to be outdoors and to be engaged in positive relationships with peers and adults.

Research shows that children in all socioeconomic groups learn at similar rates during the school year. Summer is where the inequity arises. TWO-THIRDS of the achievement gap between low-income and middle class children can be explained by unequal access to summer learning. While middle class children often accelerate their learning during the summer, low-income children lose 2-3 months of reading skill in the summer. Therefore, part of the answer to closing the achievement gap lies in the experiences that children have outside of school.

The Hasbro Summer Learning Initiative (HSLI)/WestMOST’s mission is to create equity in opportunity for all youth through expanded learning experiences, and to insure they are ready by age 21 to be productive, healthy and connected citizens in their communities. The focus of this project is to enhance the quality of community and school based summer programs by providing learning and literacy supports.
