Hasbro Summer Learning Initiative
The Hasbro Summer Learning Initiative (HSLI) is a region-wide effort to expand quality summer-learning opportunities for children throughout western Massachusetts. Since 2006, HSLI has worked with community based organizations and schools to strengthen the unique and significant role out-of-school-time (OST) programs play in supporting children’s social and academic development.
The Hasbro Summer Learning Initiative’s (HSLI) mission is to create equity in opportunity for all youth through expanded learning experiences, and to insure they are ready by age 21 to be productive, healthy and connected citizens in their communities. HSLI’s primary goal is to reverse summer learning loss for children in grades K-6, while creating sustainable improvements in the capacity of programs to deliver high-quality, intentional, literacy rich environments during the critical summer months.
The Hasbro Summer Learning Initiative has developed a national award-winning model, recognized by the National Summer Learning Association in 2009 with an Excellence award for producing positive outcomes for low-income youth in stemming summer reading loss. The initiative provides community and school-based programs with quality enhancements, including engaging experiential curriculum, reading specialists and curriculum specialists, training, and a focus on quality improvement.
